Stanley Hauerwas once said, ‘the church doesn’t have a mission; the church is the mission.’ At St James’s, church matters because it is the community that points us repeatedly back to Jesus. ‘We are witnesses to a Christ who is known only through witnesses, and it is our task to embody the joy that comes from being made part of the body of Christ that should be infectious,’ Hauerwas continues. We hold each other accountable, we build each other up, we study the Scriptures together, we create a community that celebrates the image of God present in each other, we engage in works of justice because that’s what Jesus did, and we engage in acts of radical hospitality to invite people into this living, life-giving, joyful relationship with God through Jesus.
No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. Seriously. Because church is for such a time as now.
